The Artist

John Pryde

Hailing from a small village in the Highland county of Sutherland, John Pryde has come far since running along the sandy shores of Brora beach as a youngster. Traditionally a fishing and mining town, Brora was also one of the most famous places for wool and textiles in the UK with the world-known Hunters of Brora factory producing woollen trends for the world.

On completing his schooling in the Highlands, John took the move to study at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen. This allowing John to really define his own unique style. Upon graduating, it was a move in to retail merchandising with the reputable and prestigious family owned business James L Archibald and Sons. John’s beginnings with the company saw him as a retail merchandiser before moving on to buyer for Homeware & Accessories and then on to Director of Buying.

After many successful years at Archibald’s, John had the opportunity to purchase the very reputable Alexanders of Rosemount. Alexanders had to this point been known for traditional furnishings and carpeting however, with his innovative style and eye, John turned the company in to a contemporary haven of stylish and sleek furnishings, with something for everybody’s taste.

Following 12 years of success at Alexanders, a move to Portugal would help John rediscover his original passion, Art. During 3 years in Europe, John had two hugely popular exhibitions of his work- one in Lisbon, the other at the Renato Rodyner Gallery in Cascais. Following European success, John decided it was time to return home and start a fresh challenge, PRYDE Gallery.

In August 2018, the PRYDE Gallery officially opened on Great Western Road, Aberdeen.

The main inspiration behind John’s work comes from the dramatic scenery surrounding areas from his homeland in Brora, Sutherland. Growing up with vast rolling hills, landscapes and views across the North Sea coast, allowed John to be both creative but have a realism to his work. A lot of the earlier pieces were sold exclusively to the Lennox Gallery, Loch Lomond.

Since his return to Art in 2015, new work has evolved from portraiture pieces with the female form and faces being the main focus. Most modern pieces are created with Acrylic, ink and watercolour with building on layers of colour and texture, incorporating some gold and silver leaf.

New pieces can be seen in the PRYDE Gallery. These are a mix of the newly evolved faces work alongside Johns traditional landscape and scenic designs. Commissions can also be taken, commissions can be of any size and John very much likes to work with the client to ensure that the colour, tone and expression of the work is what the client is looking for.

When entering Pryde Gallery on Great Western Road I was hit by the most wonderful aroma of burning scented candles, I first saw the gallery will driving past and it was the stunning window display that caught my eye, I would go as far as to say it was the nicest I have ever seen. Everything on display in the gallery was very stylish, modern and reasonably priced, I bought a beautiful vase and matching t-light holders which look beautiful on my console table, I have also been back to purchase some of the candles and other items for gifts. I would highly recommend a visit to see the beautiful items for sale along with the paintings which are done by the owner, a huge thank you to John for opening Pryde Gallery.

I have shopped with John for many years and was delighted when he returned to Aberdeen and opened Pryde Gallery. The window displays are always gorgeous, and his paintings are special and unique. John has always had great taste and you can find lovely lamps, home accessories or gifts in the gallery. His Pryde room spray, candles and reed diffusers are divine and fill your home with a lovely fragrance. Worth a visit!!!
